What is Pioneer Day?
Pioneer Day is a holiday celebrated by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to commemorate the arrival of the first group of pioneers of their faith arriving in the Salt Lake Valley (Utah) on July 24, 1847. The early pioneers fled from severe persecution and traveled from the eastern United States across the continent where they gathered in Utah. This holiday honors all those pioneers who left their homes, many of their belongings, and the comforts of eastern life to the vast western United States, where they began a new life together with more religious freedom. Many also continued on from Utah to California, where this holiday continues to be celebrated among congregations.
“May those today—who are the beneficiaries of the pioneers’ courage and sacrifice—hold in remembrance not only the great individuals who gave so much, but also the principles and cause for which they sacrificed.” - Dallin H. Oaks
