Laura Loomer Greeted in Nevada County with Calls for Government Censorship
Over the past 30 years and with the huge influx of transplants from the Bay Area and other more liberal areas, there has been a bluing of rural Nevada County which has introduced the more organized progressives to our quiet county. So, when the unabashed Make America Great Again supporter, Laura Loomer, was invited to Nevada County to speak at the local republican party dinner, the local progressive democrats went stark raving mad. Loomer is an independent investigative journalist who has been to the Darien Gap between Central and South America exposing the harsh and sometimes lethal conditions that illegal immigrants from all over the world face in their attempts to reach the porous border of the United States, but most importantly, Loomer is a free speech absolutist, has some very sharp opinions, and happens to be a highly effective advocate for America First policies.
Bronze medal for coordinated attack: Protesters
Prior to Loomer’s arrival in our bucolic county, the local paper of record, The Grass Valley Union, in what appears to be a coordinated attack by the local progressives, was inundated with letters to the editor and opinion pieces attacking Loomer, who is Jewish, as a white supremacist and a racist. On the day of the local republican dinner, an organized protest “spontaneously” happened in the Brunswick Basin calling Loomer a white supremacist despite her Jewish ancestry and asserting that her event was evidence of hate speech.
I found the seemingly contradictory signs of our welcoming progressive neighbors in the above pictures first published in The Grass Valley Union, humorous and bronze medal worthy, but the gold and silver medals for lunacy and absurdity go to the speakers at public comment before the board of supervisors meeting a few days prior to Loomer’s arrival.
Silver medal for lunacy: Bay Area transplant
Coming in second for the local progressives and with the silver medal is former Bay Area and Los Angeles resident, Patrick Johnson, who is also the social media content creator for the local Nevada County Democrats.
After removing his COVID mask and much like the protest signs from the Brunswick Basin, Johnson remarked how welcoming our little county is to outsiders except for those people with whom “we” disagree politically. Johnson’s use of the word “we,” appears to mean the little organized mob that had “spontaneously” formed which, also in apparent coordination, all used the words “vile” and “disgusting” when describing Loomer.
Gold medal for absurdity: local for fascist control
While the Brunswick Basin protestors and Johnson made valiant efforts at absurdity, the gold medal performance goes to our local resident, Trinie Dalton. Trinie who recently moved to Nevada County from Los Angeles is an “author and frequent contributor to the free transgenerational countercultural bimonthly Arthur Magazine.” In quintessential progressive form, Trinie told the board of supervisors that she identifies as queer, Jewish, and Mexican American mixed race, and mixed family. Trinie asserts that her family is also Indian American but only in marriage. Instead of connecting with Loomer based upon their common Jewish ancestry, Trinie is hurt and embarrassed at the invitation of Loomer by local republicans, and because the lady who owns the postal business at the local plaza where the local Republican headquarters is located is Indian, it really hurts her because the postal lady is an Indian and Trinie’s family is Indian by marriage and Laura Loomer is coming. In the higher echelons of progressivism and being woke, this diatribe has to be in the top 10 percent. It is a must see.
Then, Trinie says the quiet part out loud when she progressively requests that our local supervisors should create a position in the county for when speakers with whom the local organized mob disagree, the community can vote to determine whether such speaker will be permitted to speak. Yes, you read that correctly. The creation of not-so-free speech panels in order to regulate who comes to town to speak. While the whole I am Indian by marriage and hate Laura Loomer is certainly really funny, the seriousness of suggesting speech panels is really what earned her the gold medal. Indeed, none other than Hillary Clinton last week floated the need for federal government control of speech, so “we don’t lose control.” The type of speech control has also been promised by John Kerry and Kamala Harris.
Supervisors fail to address calls for community speech panels in Nevada County
Did the board of supervisors denounce such insanity as the destruction of the free speech rights enshrined by our Bill of Rights which by oath the supervisors are bound to protect and defend? Nope. The chair of the board, Hardy Bullock, said, “Thank you for your comment.” Hardy Bullock is the same supervisor who wrongfully cut off a public speaker recently for voicing opposition to the use of taxpayer dollars in favor of LGBTQ+ issues. Bullock asserted that such a financial topic was not within the purview of the board while also stating right before Trinie spoke last week that the local board of supervisors are going to get involved in the Palestine-Israel debate apparently intending to join Nevada City in signing a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Israel.
In response to the protestors and our local government, Loomer said that they are all intent on “the absolute shredding and the abolishment of the United States Constitution.”
What Loomer actually talked about during her visit
All told, Loomer’s speech was pretty run of the mill populist material and dominated by denouncing cancel culture and government censorship. Loomer was critical of both democrats and Washington republicans whom she believes have not adequately defended free speech while in power. She also conveyed the need to prioritize our citizens, like in North Carolina, over illegal immigrants. You know, like America but taking care of Americans. While she did not speak about 9/11 this week at her recent event, Loomer also believes that there are a lot of unanswered questions in connection with 9/11.
Apparently, asking questions about 9/11 and about why documents are still classified is a conspiracy theory to our local leftists and a valid reason for a democratic government to illegally curb free speech. In her speech, Loomer eviscerated those who seek to censor free speech - our most precise and fundamental right. Censorship stifles ideas and creativity and flies in the face of our founding culture. The attempts to silence Loomer by trying to discredit her with falsehoods and ad hominem attacks is an intentional way to avoid arguing Loomer’s ideas and diminish her effectiveness.
I can assert that the world is flat, that the Sun rotates around it, and that bleeding cures disease. I can also say that two plus two equals four. As I may be dead wrong about a vast many things, truth is truth regardless of the speaker. Attacking Loomer with falsehoods and emotionally charged language (vile and disgusting) is also simply a method of avoiding debating the ideas of the speaker.
Loomer asserts that our culture and politics must respect the first amendment and all its protections above all else. The 20th century taught us well, that the people trying to limit free speech are always...always...the bad guys. When authoritarians start to lose control of the popular narrative, cultural and political censorship is, and always has been, their number one tool. Loomer's opinion about lack of government transparency in connection to 9/11 may cause some angst with our local leftists, but her denunciation of censorship in our culture and politics should be a well-established global fact as much as the spherical shape of the Earth.
Two sides to the free speech debate: democracy or censorship
The local issue that Loomer’s visit again exposed in spades is the divergent political opinions within Nevada County. One side values the idea of free speech as envisioned by our founding political culture, while the other side advocates for cancel culture and free speech panels who would vote on whether or not your chosen speaker is allowed to speak in your county. By the statement, “Thank you for your comment,” our supervisors are either too weak to stand up to the woke mob and denounce censorship and the local Democrat party, or they tacitly agree with the local Nevada County Democrats and with Trinie’s suggestion regarding the regulation of free speech and are simply embarrassed that she said the quiet part out loud.
